What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years as a healing treatment that utilizes plant extracts to increase health and well-being. Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils medicinally to improve the health of the body and mind simultaneously.

Although aromatherapy has been around for centuries, it has recently become a staple in the medicine cabinets of those who are looking to avoid unnatural treatments and want to opt for a more holistic approach to healing.

Origins of Aromatherapy

Aromatics have been used in ancient cultures for thousands of years. Greek mythology states that the gods were given the gift of perfumes. The word “aromatherapy” was first coined in the 1920s by French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse. Gattefosse popularized the word after a burn incident spurred his curiosity about the healing power of essential oils. Gattefosse burned his hand while working and stuck it in a vat of lavender. He realized that it was an excellent and instantaneous pain reliever. He used his findings to treat soldiers during World War I and published studies on his journals to support the use of essential oils for healing.

Prior to Gattefosse’s naming of the treatment regimen, the Egyptians used essential oils and some of the more rare oils are said to have been more valuable than gold. The ancient civilizations in China, India, and Greece all used essential oils medicinally as well.

In China, doctors used sandalwood to treat cholera, while the traditional Indian herbal healing medicine practice of Ayurveda uses an assortment of plant-based oil blends to treat patients for a vast array of illnesses.
